Ragbrai - dinner Altoona, Grinnell & Boone

Ragbrai is almost here.
Ragbrai is a bike ride across Iowa though a lot of small towns. It is one of the biggest turnout bike rides in the world. People come from all over the world but mostly the US to ride the week long bike ride. One of the nicest things on Ragbrai are the friendly people of Iowa. At the overnight towns you can find dinners at local churches. Get in line because so many times they sell out very quickly. The feeling you get from a church dinner is so wonderful and you know the money is going to a good cause too. I will be riding most of the week and plan to photograph some church dinners, Mr Pork Chop and any other food related things on Ragbrai.

Setting up locations

Altoona, Iowa has 6 church dinners
Altoona United Methodist Church - Bake Potato Bar, Gluten Free Hamburgers, Fruit Pies, and Gluten Free Brownies.

Grinnell, Iowa has 4 church dinners
Grinnell United Methodist Church - Chicken and noodle served with mash potatoes and homemade pies. While waiting in line you can listen to live Dixie Land music. This is the 3rd time Ragbrai has pasted though Grinnell. This dish was created for biker by some veteran biker and past experience with big dinners from the past. Make sure to see the mural on the dinning room wall.

Boone, Iowa has 8 dinner locations
Boone First United Methodist Church - Hot Beef sandwiches served with mash potatoes and coleslaw. Homemade pies for dessert. Ice Tea and Lemon aid.
Trinity Lutheran Church - A taste of Iowa Dinner. All items are raised and grown in Iowa.
A choice of Grilled Chicken Breast, Grilled Pork Chop, Beef Kabob or Veg kabobs served with noodles and Peaches and Cream style Corn. For dessert many different types of pies and the Iowa Cow Pie (no bake cookie).

Angel

You were an Angel sent from above to watch over and guide me. You taught me to love and to be loved in return. You helped me conquer my fears, feel good in myself and trust in love. Raising you I knew I could be a good mother even if it was just pets for me. You could make me laugh when I was sad. You licked my tears to tell me it's okay. Thank you for being a part of my life.

If ever there is an cat angel I know that it was you. Take care my little Angel, mommy loves you.

Part of our progressive dinner weekend with my dad was finishing it with breakfast at Modern Cafe. My dad lives in Green Bay so when he comes to Minneapolis we try to show him a good time and for me it eating. Friday night we took him to four different places. Starting at the Sample Room for the first course. Second was Pyscho Suzies for an appetizers and beer. Main course was at Sen Yai Sen Lek. Dessert was at Dairy Queen, Grandpa's was closed by the time we finished.

Dad had the Famous Modern Hash - 2 eggs with pot roast, potatoes, & peppers. Larry had the Tomato Scrambled Eggs- with fontina and spinach. I had a special with asparagus, fontina, spinach & ham.

I don't know about you, but I always have to take a picture of my food. The good and bad just because I love remembering every little detail of the dish. I offend look at images on the web of restaurants dishes before I even think about stepping in the door. Must of the pictures on my iphone are of food from restaurants. Once I forgot the name of the dish but had the picture of it. I as the waiter if he know what dish was this picture on my phone. I use my phone are a documentary of our food adventures.

Spotlight

You might ask what’s in Spicer Minnesota.

Spicer is located just west of the twin cities less than a two hour drive with a population of 1167. And being in the land of over 10,000 lakes you can guess that, yes there are many surrounding lakes nearby. The city is quite small, with only 1.1 square miles sitting on the southwest side of Green lake. So what is in Spicer, a place where people come to get away from the big city? You might go fishing on one of the many lakes nearby or visit Sibley State Park. Or you might fancy yourself to a little murder mystery at the local Bed and Breakfast. Spicer Castle Bed and Breakfast is located on the shores of Green Lake.

Green Lake is the largest lake around this area for miles. The town was named after John Spicer who was a banker and investor who helped grow the Northern Pacific Railroad.

What Spicer Castle is know for is their Murder Mystery Dinner put on almost every weekend night. The Castle has 8 bedrooms in the main house and 5 other buildings on the grounds. About 4pm tea and Hors d’oeuvres are served in the former screened porch Anything from meatballs to fresh vegetables served with coffee, and hot or cold tea. The murder mystery starts about 8pm and sometimes you are given a little information on what your character will be, a doctor, an architect, to an aristocrat. There are two large dinning rooms where the mystery takes place. Relax, you will not be killed before the first course. The clues and instructions on how to play the game are given out during dinner. And no it is not like the typical mystery where the power goes out and one of the guests is discovered dead when the power is restored. Rather the murder takes place before your dinner and you must figure out which one of your dinner companions is the murderer. There are several different murder mysteries, so if you return you shouldn’t end up with the same mystery.

Spicer Castle also is a restaurant serving dinner from 5 to 9 pm Tuesday through Saturday.

Breakfast starts at 9am in the same rooms the murder mystery takes place. For this meal the first course was juice followed by muffins, and then a mushroom quiche. The mushroom quiche was served with a purple flower popping the yellow in quiche. The red sauce was a marinara sauce to be poured over the eggs. Check out the different type folded napkins they use. Enchiladas De Camaron

The sauce is to die for. Light and creamy, not heavy at all. A pleasant surprise to a Mexican dish. So many Mexican restaurants give you the same old stuff, but this one was great. This was a great dish to share since we were going to have tea at Spicer Castle at 4pm.

The interior of the restaurant had very beautiful wood booths, chairs and tables with art work on them. I have seen the same booth and table in Arizona and somewhere else. But it is very beautiful artwork I have to say. The birds were on the tabletop.

It was so good Larry had to finish every drop.
