dump station - enters to campground
This is a very new park to Minnesota State park system. The Range said this is the there new style of campgrounds. We camped on one of the two loops. The loop helps with backing in because you are turning and the RV almost lines up with your camp site. The loop has a lot of space between each site. The loop has a number of these huge boulders popping out of the ground creating a beautiful background. The shower house has outside doors for each shower room, great for privacy.
We were there in the fall. You could see through the trees and out pass them. You could see the other side of the mountain tops. The colors were amazing. White pine leaves were yellow and the maple trees leaves were red. The colors of yellow, red and white park against the green evergreens made for an amazing view. Because we were so high up the wind was strong. The tiny pine leaves were just twinkling color in the wind.
New Style of camper cabins
We hiked the lake side trail. Parked at the boat launch and hiked it. One view from the start had a overlook of the lake. Most of the trail is mostly wooded. Both trails end on the long boardwalk. This will take you to Onamin Overlook trail. High up you can see out to a very small island big enough for a a tree or two. There are a couple larger islands, where you can see a cabin. From the map it looks like you can rent it too. You would need a boat to get there. A small climb up is where the new Retro Camper Cabins are located. Two styles of this new syle of camper cabins. One with windows on one side of the story and half building. The other style are cabins with a loft with two beds, the main floor also has a bed too. Each cabins has a outdoor cooking countertop and a picnic table. Most of them have wonderful views. They have a full shower house with bathrooms.
Ranger said they are in design phase for an off road campground across from the comping enterence.
